SeaTrees has partnered with San Diego nonprofit Nature Collective to restore the San Elijo Lagoon in Cardiff, CA. The aim is to restore 15,000 sq-ft of salt marsh within the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve. The restoration involves eradicating invasive plant species, reintroducing native species, and maintaining the habitat over two years.

Each sq-ft of watershed restored helps by:

eliminating invasive species and reintroducing native ones, creating a balanced and thriving environment
maintaining vital habitats for various animal species, including the federally listed Belding’s savannah sparrow, contributing to the preservation of local biodiversity
improved channels that enhance tidal circulation, making the ecosystem more resilient to sea level rise and maintaining critical habitats
the return of eelgrass, which creates a habitat for marine species like octopuses, sea hares, and seals
improved water quality by filtering and purifying the surrounding waters through the presence of native plant species
opportunities for community education about coastal ecosystems and their restoration

With your support we are working alongside Nature Collective to restore a portion of the watershed in Cardiff California, in the West Basin of San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve near the inlet. This project is one of the most extensive wetland restorations in California.This salt marsh serves as a vital habitat for a variety of wildlife species and as one of the most extensive wetland restorations in California, restoration work is crucial to eliminate and manage invasive plant species, while reintroducing native species to the lagoon.

Brand Partner Coastal Watershed Restoration in Hawaii

With your support, we work with Regenerative Education Centers ("REC") to remove invasive species, and replant native and voyaging species on Maui, Hawaii.

The restoration efforts will focus specifically on the planting of native and regenerative plant species (a mix of grasses, shrubs, and trees) in critical areas within the watershed. That will, in turn, reduce soil erosion and sedimentation into the streams, resulting in direct improvements and protection of the reefs systems that are located at the end of the watershed. Less sediment coming out of the watershed = healthier reefs!
